Rules to Coaching Kids
Rules to Coaching Kids
Hey there, parents and fellow coaches! Coach Dan here, ready to share some essential rules for coaching kids. When it comes to teaching techniques to our young warriors, we have to be mindful of their individual needs and create an environment that fosters growth and enjoyment. So, let's dive into it!
Rule #1: Demonstrating Techniques
When I demonstrate a technique to the group of kids, and I notice one of the students struggling to execute it correctly, I have three choices.
First, I can walk over and provide a physical correction while assuring them they're doing a good job. Second, I can call out the steps of the technique to the whole class. Lastly, I can allow the student to make a mistake.
Rule #2: Individual Corrections
Making a verbal correction in front of the other kids may make the individual student feel singled out and discouraged.
We want to create an environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth, rather than sources of embarrassment. So, if I make a physical correction, I make sure not to highlight that I'm correcting them. Instead, I emphasize their effort and let them know they're doing a good job.
Rule #3: Group Instruction
Alternatively, I can break down the technique step by step, loudly explaining it to the whole class.
By doing so, I hope that the struggling student will hear and understand the correct way to perform the technique without feeling targeted.
But above all, the most important thing is to make all the kids feel comfortable and eager to come back for more. We want to create a supportive atmosphere where they feel a sense of belonging. As they develop friendships within the group, they'll naturally start sharing techniques and knowledge with one another.
Remember, coaching kids is not solely about them mastering every technique flawlessly.
It's about instilling a love for the sport, building confidence, and fostering a positive social environment. When they feel safe, supported, and surrounded by friends, the techniques will follow naturally.
So let's keep these rules in mind as we guide our young warriors on their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey. Together, we'll create a generation of skilled, confident, and passionate martial artists!
